Learning goes beyond classroom walls for learning is NOT a line. Learning is not a circle or checklist. It can jump, run, test and rest. Learning can grab a buddy or dream on its own. Learning can be inside, outside and inside out. Learning takes place within a person and community, small and big. Learning fits into and flows from many spaces. What is your favorite space, place, environment for learning?
In the spirit of honoring the student’s gifts and strengths, many schools have created “Maker Spaces” and “Learning Labs.” These creative, innovative spaces allow children to move furniture, investigate a topic based on their learning styles, explore content with multi-sensory tools, show what they know through creating, problem-solve based on stories, and more. STEM, STEAM, and eSTEM go hand in hand with these new spaces for education. Growing Green Hearts works to coach parents, students, staff, and administrators in enhancing or creating these spaces using eSTEM, environmental stewardship, and community connections.
Energy Squad for Schools™ is a program through Growing Green Hearts. It’s a combination of a STEM workshop for parents and teachers combined with an in-school field trip for students. Geared towards upper elementary students, the in-school field trip emphasizes student leadership by coaching kids in saving money and energy for their school. Both site visits refresh, explore, and engage participants in climate change basics, the scientific method and engineering design process through the lens of environmental stewardship. Groups work in teams to complete experiments and activities around climate change, energy conservation, and team building. Energy Squad for Schools™ works great for PTO/PTA groups, teacher trainings, STEM days for students, and the K-6 maker spaces and learning lab movement. While 14 of 22 state science standards for upper elementary students can be met during Energy Squad for Schools™ programming…
